Last month I found out that you could make gin at home with only juniper berries and an alcoholic spirit. I’ve always thought about crafting my own beer or other alcoholic beverages, so when I found out that you could craft your own gin with only a spirit and juniper berries, which are included in the gin-tonic set, I got excited to try this. Trying to make it this way is also a fun activity to do with friends or just with yourself. Here is the simplified process in a step-by-step guide. So, without further ado let’s jump into how to make your own gin based on juniper berries and an alcoholic spirit:
-
The first step is to choose a spirit as base for your gin. Keep the spirit neutral without flavors because it serves as a base of your gin. My recommendation is to use vodka since it doesn’t have as much flavor.
-
Second, add your juniper berries to the base. Preferably one tablespoon juniper berries but if you want to make it more flavorful add more than one tablespoon.
-
Next, add any additional herbs you like to the base and mix them together in a glass jar to infuse. After sealing and mixing the jar, let it steep for 24-48 hours in a dark and cool place until herbs are infused properly. Taste the infusion periodically to ensure you have the taste you want.
-
Lastly, drain the mixture so that the juniper berries and additional herbs are removed from the gin and bottle it up!
And voilá, there you have it: your own home-made gin. A creative and self-sustained way to craft your own gin with ingredients included in the gin-tonic set. Time to enjoy together with friends and family!
